Dear Athlete,
I am pleased to invite you to participate in “Camp Shriver 2023.” Camp Shriver is, and will continue to be, a place for people with intellectual disabilities to learn new sports skills and improve individual sport performance, participate in individual and team sports, build friendships and have fun with partners who have signed on and trained as camp volunteers. The Camp will be social, as well as athletic, and campers will come from public and private schools, volunteer agencies, and the local community.

The goals of Camp Shriver are to 1) recruit new athletes and volunteers, especially from hard-to-reach urban areas, into the Special Olympics family, 2) create opportunities for these athletes and volunteers, in an atmosphere of understanding, learning, and sharing, so that new friendships between athletes and their partners (volunteers) are created and continue to thrive through participation in Unified Sports in the coming year, 3) provide new sports and other opportunities for all participants as well as strengthen existing sports camp experiences for people with intellectual disabilities, 4) focus on and enhance the quality of individual and team sports training with measurable outcomes for campers and volunteers, and 5) rekindle the energy that helped form the basis for Special Olympics and develop the Camp Shriver program in communities throughout the USA and around the world.
Campers are persons with intellectual disabilities age 14 and up. Partners and volunteers are individuals without intellectual disabilities ages 14 and up. Campers and volunteers alike should be able to use the Camp Shriver experience for community service credits toward school requirements.

This year we are planning sessions that will include Flag Football, Cornhole, Kickball, among others. The camp warm ups and arrival will start promptly at 8:00 AM and Sports Training and Competition will start at 8:30 AM each morning and end at 2:00 PM each afternoon. Volunteers will need to arrive at 7:30 AM daily. There will be a Unified Partners Orientation (Special Olympics Athletes not required to attend) June 2nd beginning at 2:00 PM. Camp will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene 9955 Old Hammond Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816 1-225-926-8358 June 5th to June 9th. Lunch will be provided each day. We hope that you will be able to join us for our camp! Please when signing up, sign up with the intent to be present the entire week.
Since camp activities are limited to a total of 50 athletes, don’t delay! If you are able, we would like you to register using our online registration form. Simply go to online form and fill out the form accordingly. We receive these instantly. Medicals are required for all athletes to attend.
Please note, PCAs that come with athletes may be asked to participate if there is a partner/volunteer shortage.

I look forward to your participation at Camp Shriver!
