LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — The Lafayette Police Department wrapped up its annual Camp Schriver event with the Special Olympics on Thursday, June 12. The closing ceremony featured a spirited kickball match between local officers and the special athletes.
Charles Courville, training director for the Lafayette area, explained that the camp, which began in 1968 with Eunice Kennedy Shriver, has had the involvement of the Lafayette Police Department for the past five years.
“It’s our annual Camp Schriver. Officers are serving as mentors and partners to our athletes,” Courville said.
Throughout the week, participants enjoyed various sports, including basketball, flag football, and a new addition—pickleball.
“We played kickball, we played basketball, flag football. We introduced pickleball to them this week, so they have done that for the last three days,” Courville added.
Keaton Bowden attended Camp Schriver for the first time and expressed his favorite activity.
